A Commentary on Tithing and the Bible Verse “Will a Man Rob God” (Malachi 3:8)

In his Facebook page, Bro Frank Telford has provided a helpful commentary on tithing and the often quoted bible verse “Will a Man Rob God” (Malachi 3:8)

Many preachers quote Malachi 3:8 (“Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings.”) Completely out of context. The truth of the matter is many of the preachers quoting it are the ones robbing God. Look at what else Malachi says,

10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, Mal 3

Now think for a moment about what God wanted to use that food or the money we bring to church for. Was God saying that you are robbing me by not tithing so churches can build bigger buildings? Was He saying you’re robbing me because the sound systems and entertainment value has not been funded properly? Was He saying you have robbed Me because the pastor isn’t wealthy? Absolutely not!!!! He said those withholding the tithes robbed Him because they didn’t take care of those who were in need but instead spent it on fruitless things that will soon perish. How do we know this? Well there was Paul who said,

13 For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened; 14 but by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may supply their lack, that their abundance also may supply your lack—that there may be equality. 15 As it is written, “He who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack. 2 Cor 8

We also find the apostles who were appointed to be the leaders of the early church and set the proper example for us today.

33 And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all. 34 Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold, 35 and laid them at the apostles’ feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need. Acts 4

The whole purpose for our giving is so those around us less fortunate have what they need. What else do you think Malachi wanted to use that food for? It was to feed the people who didn’t have enough. If you want to give to the local church consider the local church is the people and not the building. You should encounter the local church everyday of your life because the people are all around us and never forget what Jesus told Peter. He said if you love me then feed my sheep! So the ones really robbing God are those busy living their best lives now and the preachers who when they feast with us feed only themselves.
