Things to Remember When Seeking Divine Healing (George Jeffreys)

George Jeffreys (28 February 1889–26 January 1962) was one of greatest evangelists of the 20th Century, and who had a powerful healing ministry that spread across the United Kingdom. In his book Healing Rays, Jeffreys provided some points for people who are seeking divine healing to consider:

“That the state of your spiritual life can easily affect the condition of your body; therefore see that your spiritual life is nourished by prayer, and the reading of God’s Word.

Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. (James 5:13)

This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me. (Psalm 119:50)

That healing, like salvation, is all of grace, therefore do not consider your own worthiness.

He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? (Romans 8:32)

That you should not worry over your little faith, but consider the greatness of the Divine Physician.

And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you. (Luke 17:6)

That you must not be discouraged if not immediately healed. Yours might be a gradual recovery.

Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. (John 4:52)

That due attention must be given to the laws of health as to food, hygiene, bodily exercise, and rest.

If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes… I am the Lord that healeth thee. (Exodus 15:26)

That a cheerful heart is a tonic to yourself and to others, therefore cultivate a happy disposition.

A merry heart doeth good like a medicine. (Proverbs 17:22)

That God is glorified and His works made manifest when the supernatural is in evidence.

Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in Him. I must work the works of Him that sent Me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. (John 9:3-4)

This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth His glory; and His disciples believed on Him. (John 2:11)

Hindrances in the Way of Healing (George Jeffreys)

George Jeffreys (28 February 1889–26 January 1962) was one of greatest evangelists of the 20th Century, and who had a powerful healing ministry that spread across the United Kingdom. In his book Healing Rays, Jeffreys attempted to share from the Scriptures some hindrances to divine healing.

Unbelief:

But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house. And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching. (Mark 6:4-6)

Seeking healing for self-gratification:

Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. (James 4:3)

Being guilty of personal sins:

If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me. (Psalm 66:18)

Why Are Not All Healed at Healing Services? Is It Due to a Lack of Faith?

George Jeffreys (28 February 1889–26 January 1962) was one of greatest evangelists of the 20th Century, and who had a powerful healing ministry that spread across the United Kingdom. In his book Healing Rays, Jeffreys attempted to address the question of why not all people were healed at his healing services.

Question:

Why are some of the people who seek healing at your revival and healing campaigns not healed?

Answer:

There are many reasons such as are mentioned in the next answer. All were not healed in the days of the Lord.

And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching. (Mark 6:5-6)

Question:

Do you attribute failure on the part of those who are not healed to lack of faith?

Answer:

We do not attribute all failures to the lack of faith. There might be other reasons why people are not healed. Hindrances in the lives of seekers, and unwillingness to obey the commandments of the Lord, can hinder the work of healing. Again some are allowed to suffer for disciplinary and other purposes.

Physician Prays and Anoints His Patient with Oil – Tumour Disappears!

One remarkable case of healing was shared by Dr A.J. Gordon in his book Ministry of Healing (and recounted by the late evangelist George Jeffreys in his book Healing Rays), involving a renowned physician anointing one of his patients with oil according to James 5, and in answers to his prayer, she was healed of tumour.

“I had under my professional care a Christian lady, with a tumour which confined her almost continuously to her bed in severe suffering. All remedies were unavailing, and the only human hope was the knife: but, feeling in my heart the power of the promise, I one morning sat down by her bedside, and taking up the Bible, I read aloud God’s promise to His believing children: ‘And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him’. I then asked her if she would trust the Lord to remove this tumour and to restore her to health, and to her missionary work. She replied, ‘I have no particular faith about it, but am willing to trust the Lord for it’. I then knelt and anointed her with oil in the Name of the Lord, asking Him to fulfil His own word. Soon after I left, she got up and walked three miles. From that time the tumour rapidly lessened, until all trace of it at length disappeared.”

The Purpose of Miracles and Healings (George Jeffreys)

George Jeffreys (28 February 1889–26 January 1962) was one of greatest evangelists of the 20th Century, and who had a powerful healing ministry that spread across the United Kingdom. In his book Healing Rays, Jeffreys attempted to provide an explanation for the purpose of miracles and healings.

It is evident to the careful reader of the Gospels that miracles and healings served more than one purpose. They were not only given to attest the ministry of our Lord and those He had appointed, but they were instrumental in attracting people to Christ and in encouraging faith. Let us take some instances in the Gospel of John. In chapter 2, verse 11, we read, “This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of galilee, and manifested forth His glory; and His disciples believe on Him”. In verse 23 of the same chapter we read, “Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, in the feast day, many believed in His name, when they saw the miracles which He did”. Nicodemus, in chapter 3, referred to our Lord’s miracles and the inference is that they were partly the means of bringing him to Christ. In chapter 6, verse 2, we are told, “And a great multitude followed Him, because they saw His miracles which He did on them that were diseased”. It was the miracles of the loaves and fishes that drew forth the following testimony from those who stood near, “This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world”. It was the miracles that made people conclude that Jesus was the Christ, for they said, in chapter 7, verse 31, “When Christ cometh, will He do more miracles that these which this Man hath done?” In chapter 11, verse 45, we read of many Jews believing, after seeing the things which Jesus did. It was the miracle of the raising of Lazarus from the dead that made the Jews of chapter 12, verse 11, believe on Jesus, and again it was the miracle that brought more people into contact with Him according to the 18th verse.

Watchman Nee: Some Christians are Not Healed of Their Illness Because They Love the Attention They Get From It

Do you notice that some Christians are never healed of their sickness yet never tire of talking about it? According to Watchman Nee, the late Chinese church leader and Christian leader, who was writing in his book “Messages for Building Up New Believers, Volume 2, the reason that they are not healed may be because they take pleasure from the attention that they are getting from their illness:

I can report hundreds of cases that I have witnessed during the past twenty or more years of my life. They all prove that many people are sick for specific reasons. Their illnesses are healed immediately when they identify the causes, deal with them, and remove them. As long as the causes remain, they cannot be healed.

I know of a brother who always desired affection from others. He wanted to be loved, to be spoken to nicely, to receive visits, and to be treated in a gentle way. If anyone asked how he was doing, he immediately would relate everything that had happened the previous night or that morning in a detailed way. He could tell others almost the exact time of his fever, from what hour to what hour, and the kind of headache he experienced, from what hour to what hour. He could tell you exactly how many times he breathed and how many times his heart beat a minute. He was always feeling ill, and he always liked to tell others about his illness. He wanted the warm sympathy of others. If you talked to him, he would have nothing to talk about except his illness. Every day he talked about his illness, and he wondered why he was never healed.

It is not an easy thing to speak an honest word to others. One must pay a price to speak the truth. One day I gathered enough strength within myself to speak to this one. I said, “The only reason you have been sick so long is that you like to be sick.” He denied it. I said, “Do you not love your illness? You are afraid that this illness will leave you. You love your illness.” He denied it again. But I said, “You like others to sympathize with you and to love you. You like others to take care of you and to treat you nicely. You cannot have it by other means, so you try to get it by becoming ill. If you want to be healed by the Lord, you must rid yourself of this thought! When others ask how you are doing, you need to learn to say, ‘I am fine.’ See what will happen if you do that! When others ask how you were doing the night before, you should say, ‘Fine!’” He said, “My heart is sincere. I cannot lie. I feel that I am not fine. What should I do if I truly was not well the night before?” I said, “Let me read you a verse. The son of the Shunammite woman was lying on the bed already dead. She went to see Elisha, and he asked, ‘Is it well with you?…Is it well with the child? And she said, It is well’ (2 Kings 4:26). Actually, her son was lying on the bed already dead. Why did she say that it was well? She said it because she believed. She believed that God would save her son. Today you can believe, too. When others ask, ‘How were you last night?’ You should say, ‘Fine.’ It is fine even if you died the night before. You have to believe that it was fine.” He had nothing to say after these words. As soon as he denied his self-love, rejected sympathy, and dropped his expectation for consolation, his illness went away.

We must realize that many illnesses have internal causes as well as external causes. A man must learn to believe in God. When God’s purpose is achieved, the sickness goes away. Once God achieves His spiritual goal in us, our sickness is over.
