Finally Understanding God’s Gift of Righteousness

For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ. (Romans 5:17; NLT)

God’s gift of righteousness is such a wonderful thing (hallelujah!), and we always rejoice when we hear of testimonies of people who have received this blessing.

Why is the receiving of God’s gift of righteousness such an exciting thing? Well, it is because “all who receive it will live in TRIUMPH OVER SIN AND DEATH through this one man” (Romans 5:17; NLT; emphasis mine). I constantly hear stories of people who upon learning of God’s gift of righteousness on their deathbeds lose all fear of their impending death, but instead look forward to it. I have also previously shared the true stories of a long-term alcoholic, as well as an Indian contruction worker in Singapore who had many sins in his life, who were set free from their vices and had their lives totally transformed — and these are just a handful of illustrations.

Now, read that verse again; it says “ALL who receive it…” (Romans 5:17; NLT). Yes, my friend — it doesn’t matter what your background or your former past is like. It doesn’t matter whether you are rich or poor, educated or poorly educated. It doesn’t matter whether you live in a wealthy suburb or in a ghetto. The bible says “ALL” — which means you too, my friend, can live in triumph over sin and death, if you so wish to.

And it is not motivational, airy-fairy, made-belief hype that the bible promises. 1 John 3:7 says “Little children, let no one deceive you: The one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as Jesus is righteous.” (NET bible translation). The bible promises real and tangible righteousness and victory — you can overcome because “the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds” (2 Corinthians 10:4, KJV), just as the people I had cited above too had overcome the demonic strongholds in their life, and are going on in their lives practising righteousness.

Do you wish to receive this gift of righteousness? It’s so simple! First, ask the Lord Jesus Christ to come into your life (if you haven’t already done so) and then ask Him for his free gift of righteousness. Yes, indeed; it is free — won’t cost you a thing (if you don’t believe me, read the English Standard version translation of Romans 5:17 yourself: “free gift of righteousness “). Why is it free? Because Jesus Christ paid for it all by dying for us on the cross on Calvary, and now, we receive this gift under “God’s abundant provision of grace” (Romans 5:17, NIV; with ‘grace’ here referring to God’s ‘unmerited favour’).
